NUTTY INITIALS set also included 17 stickers with four smaller sized letters and numbers. Rather than using a photomechanical stat machine to reduce the original images, Norman Saunders was hired to repaint all of these smaller images by hand. Careful comparison reveals unique differences between the larger and smaller versions of each letter. When Norm delivered these smaller paintings and received his freelance paycheck, he asked Topps why they had preferred to hire him to repaint the smaller images instead of using a stat machine. He was told that his wages were actually cheaper than using the stat machine. This revelation was a shock to the artist's pride. He came home and said, "I can't believe I'm so far down the pay scale that I'm cheaper to use than a copy machine!" |
